The Ondili lodges in the Kalahari, the Namib and the Erongo are connected to a well-developed network of hiking trails. These are regularly maintained and are clearly signposted. Hiking maps are available at the reception. If there are any questions about the routes, the Ondili team on site will be happy to help.
The three regions are particularly suitable for independent, non-guided hikes, as lions or elephants are not to be expected here.
For Namibia travellers who prefer to be accompanied by a guide, all hikes can also be booked locally.
Our multi-day trekking tours “Trans Kalahari Walk” and “Namib Mountain Trail” or individually arranged outdoor activities intensify the nature experience even more.
Four walks of varying lengths and the cycle track start at Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge.
A hiking trail leads from the houses of the Devil’s Claw Lodge to this trail network. The Nyala Walk is the quickest to reach from Devil’s Claw Lodge and is therefore the recommended walking trail for guests of this lodge (see also walking map).
Red Dam Walk
A one-hour circular walk with two dune crossings and the Sundowner Sofa, a seating area on a dune.
Nyala Walk
Approximately two-hour walk through the bush and tree savannah. The trail is the most likely to encounter animals. Giraffe, eland, wildebeest, zebra, springbok and impala prefer this habitat. There is solid ground, no sand or dune passages. Also good for jogging as it is sand-free.
Tree trail
A good two-and-a-half-hour hike through an attractive dune landscape with relatively many camel thorn trees.
Dune trail
Two-hour circular walk around the Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge with dune crossings and sandy passages.
Desert Homestead Lodge
A half-hour circular walk above the lodge provides a good panoramic view.
Namib Outpost
The circular walk, which takes about one and a half hours, is unexpectedly varied and also offers very rewarding motifs for photographers. However, the route is not easy to walk. There are two steep passages. Absolutely worthwhile.
Hohenstein Lodge has laid out three varied hiking trails that can also be combined with each other.
Damara Trail
A one-hour hike. The starting point of the hike is the sun terrace of the lodge. Along the dry river course the hike leads into the savannah plain, which is surrounded by an interesting granite formation.
Kudu Trail
A two and a half hour hike. From the sun deck of the lodge the Kudu Trail starts together with the Damara Trail for the first 300 m and then leads at a fork in the road to the heights at Mount Kainachab. Very beautiful views of the southern Erongo flank with Hohenstein as the highest of the mountains. A varied hike with many rewarding photo opportunities.
Oryx Trail
A two-hour hike around the Hohenstein Lodge’s local mountain on the right. Good chance of seeing animals such as giraffe, springbok, oryx and wildebeest. The hike starts at the main lodge building.
On the guided bushwalk you will get to know the fauna and especially the flora of the region. The guide gives you exciting insights into nature. Experiencing the bush on foot, tracking antelopes and birdlife and gaining insights into the traditional medicinal use of indigenous plants is something you cannot experience on the gamedrive vehicle in the park, as you are not allowed to get out in Etosha. The walk takes you through dense bush, later through mopane forest, then through open savannah.
