Huab Nature Drive

Damaraland

The camp is close to the Huab River. It is the starting point for an observation drive downstream into the lonely desert region through which the dry river runs. It is the settlement area of Namibia’s desert-adapted elephants. To observe this unfortunately only small number of adapted elephants in their habitat is a special experience. Our guides can usually determine the location of the elephants from the tracks in the sand bed of the river. As is so often the case, it is a balancing act between species protection / nature conservation through tourism and disturbing the animals in their rhythm of life. The animals are now valued by the Damaras living there as something valuable and are not poached. For example, the drinking places for the small herds of goats of the people who live there are fixed to elephants.
Directly or indirectly, almost all people in the region live only from tourism. The presence of the desert elephants is a decisive criterion for tourists to come here. The excursion is an experience not to be missed. Absolutely recommendable.
